Dark Lord: The Basics

In general, the A Button talks to people and examines things. The B Button uses magic. The Start Button opens and closes the command menu, and the Select Button changes the party order.
During battle, the A Button unleashes a melee attack with the currently equipped weapon. The B Button will bring up the Action Menu (D = Defend, I = Item, S = Scroll--in other words, magic). Press the Start button on the Action Menu to change the currently selected item or spell. You can flee the battle with the Select Button.
The trickiest thing about magic at first is just figuring out how to use it, and to be honest, it could've been implemented better.
In exploration mode, the character in the lead is the one whose spell will be cast, so to use magic, you have to first put the character you want in the lead, then press B to cast the spell.
When you choose a Scroll (your magic), you have to push the A Button twice on the selection screen. You can only use the magic you have selected. You can change spells in battle using the Action Menu (D - I - S) by pressing the Start Button over "S". In battle, at least, all characters can use different spells, not just the lead character, and the game remembers who's using which spell, but it's still a pain if you have to change spells over and over.

The Standard Flow

First, you create your characters. This will be explained in detail later on, so feel free to refer to that section. You take a job in town, raising your abilities and learning skills. This too is covered later, in the "Character Building" section. You can have up to three characters in your party. "Fighter - Fighter - Wizard" and "Fighter - Wizard - Wizard" are the most recommended combinations.
Next, you investigate for anything out of the ordinary. As you wander around town talking to people, you'll eventually be asked to go on an adventure or take a job. Finally your quest begins. There are flowcharts given elsewhere for each quest in case you have trouble. This sequence then continues until you've completed all the scenarios.

Other Things to Note
  • In this world, one year is six months.
  • INT affects your ability to learn magic as well as your receptiveness to enemy spells.
  • VIT is the number of times you can be resurrected. Each time resurrection magic is used on a dead character, that character's VIT drops (even if the spell fails).
  • DIV can be raised by donating to the temple. This method is much faster than working as a Shepherd, but of course it also costs a lot more. It depends on how long you want to play. (The higher your DIV, supposedly, the lower the prices in shops and the luckier you are, but it's unclear what "the luckier you are" means. Maybe it increases your chance of finding items after battles?)
  • You can lower your age. Check the "Tricks" section.
